Non-IFRS and Non-GAAP Measures
The terms “EBITDA” and “backlog” are financial measures used in this document which are not standard measures under International Financial Reporting Standards (“IFRS”) or Canadian generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”). The Company’s method of calculating EBITDA and backlog may differ from the methods used by other issuers. Therefore, the Company’s measure of EBITDA and/or backlog, as presented in this document, may not be comparable to similar measures presented by other issuers.
EBITDA refers to net earnings of the Company determined in accordance with IFRS (after January 1, 2010) and GAAP (prior to January 1, 2010), before depreciation and amortization, interest expense, accretion expense, income tax expense, non-controlling interest, gain or loss on disposal of property and equipment, income or loss from discontinued operations, special charges and recovery, and stock-based compensation expense. Management believes that EBITDA is a useful supplemental measure of cash available for debt service, working capital, capital expenditures, income taxes, and distribution.
“Backlog” is the value of revenue remaining to be earned from purchase orders received from customers. The projects represented in backlog are executed according to a schedule agreed with each customer, which could range in duration from one month to eighteen months. Revenues are earned on a percentage of completion basis. Management uses this measure, which has no comparable measure calculated in accordance with IFRS or GAAP, to i) monitor the Company’s success in securing new orders, and ii) gauge the likelihood of meeting revenue objectives in future periods.
Investors are cautioned that EBITDA and backlog, as Non-IFRS and Non-GAAP Measures, are not alternatives to measures under IFRS or GAAP and should not, on their own, be construed as an indicator of the Company’s performance or cash flows, a measure of liquidity or as a measure of actual return.
